Men and women began to experiment with the cap’s style as it got more popular, turning it backwards or sideways as a statement of personal expression. Rappers, punk rockers, and grunge singers wore the headgear in the 1990s, and pop artists and the MTV generation wore it in the 2000s.

The hat became a popular way for celebrities to cover their faces from paparazzi. The style spread across boundaries as it grew in popularity. In the early 2000s, young British middle-class urbanites adopted the baseball hat as part of their standard uniform. The baseball cap or trucker hat is still worn today, often humorously or to show solidarity with the working class.

However, high-end versions of the cap have been created by fashion houses such as A.P.C., Burberry, Brunello Cucinelli, Gucci, and Kenzo, bringing it into the realm of luxury fashion. While more expensive variations may denote prestige, the common baseball cap’s affordability, as well as its endurance as a fashion statement, has ensured that it remains firmly entrenched in the modern style lexicon.
