Baseball caps are so common in American culture that they could be considered the country’s official hat. It is often adjustable in the back thanks to a plastic, Velcro, or elastic band and is made composed of a soft cap and stiff visor.
Baseball caps evolved from earlier brimmed hats popular in the late 1800s – [High quality] NRL St George Illawarra Dragons Black Cap Black Snapback
such as deerstalkers made famous by Sherlock Holmes paintings, jockey caps, military “pillbox” caps, fedoras, and boaters. In the mid-to late-nineteenth century, baseball caps were constructed of wool with a leather bill and were worn solely by baseball players. As the twentieth century began, headwear began to make its way into regular clothing.
Today, baseball caps are worn to indicate support for a team, as a fashion statement, or to convey a message, as evidenced by Donald Trump’s fans wearing red Make America Great Again trucker hats (a sort of baseball cap). Baseball was established in America in about 1800, and the National League was founded in 1876, but the first clubs did not wear uniform hats.
To keep the sun out of their eyes, players were free to wear any sort of brimmed hat. Many people preferred the pillbox or straw boater styles. The 1888 edition of Spalding’s Official Baseball Guide depicts a wide range of baseball caps, including soft and hard cap types.
Around the turn of the century, the cap as we know it began to take shape: air holes were added in the 1890s; a logo first appeared in 1901, when the Detroit Tigers used an image of a running orange tiger on the front of the cap; sticking was added to the visor in 1903; longer bills were introduced in the 1920s and 1930s, and the visor became firmer
By the 1940s, the crown had become more vertical, allowing the front of the cap to function as a billboard and molding it into the shape we know today. For the comfort of the players, the Major Baseball League changed the standard headgear from wool to polyester in 2007.
While the appearance of the baseball cap hasn’t altered much since the 1950s, people’s views towards it have. The author of Ball Cap Nation: A Journey Through the World of America’s National Hat, Jim Lilliefors, suggests numerous explanations for the baseball cap’s increasing popularity and acceptance off the field.
As baseball grew more popular as a result of television broadcasts, fans began to wear hats to show their support for their favorite teams. Agricultural enterprises realized the cap’s advertising potential in the 1960s, and promotional caps — now known as trucker hats – were increasingly popular in the 1970s and 1980s.
Baseball hats, on the other hand, were lauded for their ability to protect both men’s and women’s faces from the sun. This was supported by Vogue summary fashion editorials from the time, which helped the cap become genderless. Finally, celebrities such as Tom Selleck in the role of Thomas Magnum on Magnum, P.I., MacGyver from the show of the same name, and Tom Cruise in Top Gun wore baseball caps, cementing the cap’s shift from field to fashion.
Men and women began to experiment with the cap’s style as it got more popular, turning it backward or sideways as a statement of personal expression. Rappers, punk rockers, and grunge singers wore the headgear in the 1990s, and pop artists and the MTV generation wore it in the 2000s.
The hat became a popular way for celebrities to cover their faces from the paparazzi. The style spread across boundaries as it grew in popularity. In the early 2000s, young British middle-class urbanites adopted the baseball hat as part of their standard uniform. The baseball cap or trucker hat is still worn today, often humorously or to show solidarity with the working class.
However, high-end versions of the cap have been created by fashion houses such as A.P.C., Burberry, Brunello Cucinelli, Gucci, and Kenzo, bringing it into the realm of luxury fashion. While more expensive variations may denote prestige, the common baseball cap’s affordability, as well as its endurance as a fashion statement, has ensured that it remains firmly entrenched in the modern style lexicon.
