Then they get the validation they need to act out their ways. We only have the smallest snippet of info about these people: we know they use racial slurs and we know they treat other races, at least publicly, with respect and are not afraid to befriend people of other races. Given only these two pieces of information I would hesitate to call these people racist and I thought it worth sharing my opinion that labeling them racist might be a bit of a hasty judgment that could, I didn’t choose to be black I just got lucky shirt if overused, weaken the power of that label. I am definitely not trying to claim that people who can “fake it” in public are not racist simply because they smile and nod. I disagree. It is the subtlety of their behaviour that is even worse. They hide their true feelings behind masks of friendliness.
This is a dangerous type of racism, and it’s people like this that can turn if the situation demands it. Think about the Nazis- those who became the ‘good’ Nazis were those who said nothing when their neighbours were being taken away, killed etc. They were silently complicit. Words and thoughts are weapons that damage people also. I understand your reason for bringing rape up and, in many ways, I think it is an excellent analogy but I will refrain from adding anything further on that. Just to make sure we are working with the same ideas, I want to be clear that I am completely for confronting, in some manner, these people, and anyone else like them, when they make inappropriate jokes or comments. I am definitely for that. I do not think this kind of behavior should be normal and I hope that someone approaches them in a manner that will get the point across.
