As baseball grew more popular as a result of television broadcasts, fans began to wear hats to show their support for their favourite teams. Agricultural enterprises realised the cap’s advertising potential in the 1960s, and promotional caps — now known as trucker hats – were increasingly popular in the 1970s and 1980s.

Baseball hats, on the other hand, were lauded for their ability to protect both men and women’s faces from the sun. This was supported by Vogue summery fashion editorials from the time, which helped the cap become genderless. Finally, celebrities such as Tom Selleck in the role of Thomas Magnum on Magnum, P.I., MacGyver from the show of the same name, and Tom Cruise in Top Gun wore baseball caps, cementing the cap’s shift from field to fashion.

Men and women began to experiment with the cap’s style as it got more popular, turning it backwards or sideways as a statement of personal expression. Rappers, punk rockers, and grunge singers wore the headgear in the 1990s, and pop artists and the MTV generation wore it in the 2000s.

The hat became a popular way for celebrities to cover their faces from paparazzi. The style spread across boundaries as it grew in popularity. In the early 2000s, young British middle-class urbanites adopted the baseball hat as part of their standard uniform. The baseball cap or trucker hat is still worn today, often humorously or to show solidarity with the working class.

However, high-end versions of the cap have been created by fashion houses such as A.P.C., Burberry, Brunello Cucinelli, Gucci, and Kenzo, bringing it into the realm of luxury fashion. While more expensive variations may denote prestige, the common baseball cap’s affordability, as well as its endurance as a fashion statement, has ensured that it remains firmly entrenched in the modern style lexicon.
