It appears that certain far-right Christians are against not only transgender females participating on sports teams, but also all girls participating in sports. and that opposition may have led to legal issues for one Christian school.
Right-wing Christians today oppose girls participating in any sports
After learning that Coast Union High School (CUHS) in Santa Maria, California, had two girls on its team, Valley Christian Academy (VCA) postponed its upcoming football game against CUHS on October 29. While it may seem weird for women to be able to play on teams with a majority of men, Title IX, the federal statute passed in 1972 that forbids sexism in athletics at any institution receiving financing from the federal government, really requires it.
According to Title IX, females must be permitted to try out for the boys’ team and compete on the same terms as boys in sports when a girls’ team is not available. Regarding its forfeiture against CUHS, VCA has not made any public remarks. However, the school gave an explanation for why it made a similar choice to forfeit a football game against Cuyama Valley High School (CVHS) last year because the team included a lady.
Football is a violent sport, and at the time, VCA head pastor and school chief Joel Mikkelson told The Santa Maria Times, “We understand the usefulness of such in preparing our young men within the confines of an organized activity.” The two girls on his squad were singled out by VCA solely because of their gender, CUHS head coach Andrew Crosby told The Tribune.
Emily Reed and Andrea Aguilar are the names of the girls. Crosby stated that he would never make Reed or Aguilar leave the field in order to make room for VCA, nor would he want the girls to believe that the game’s cancellation was their responsibility. It’s unfair, he added, and I hope that they can have faith in our assistance because of the support of their families, the team, and the community.
They will wear our team’s uniform and participate in every match. Forfeited games are still considered wins for CUHS. However, by choosing to forfeit its games, VCA might have broken both state and federal laws governing student-athletes. Last year, when VCA postponed its match against CVHS, it informed the school in writing that its female athlete would not be permitted to compete on the VCA campus.
It’s possible that the letter broke Title IX laws. The letter might have also gone against CIF (California Interscholastic Federation) regulations mandating that schools adhere to Title IX. A complaint was then filed by the father of the female CVHS player against VCA, asking for a jury trial, “unspecified damages over loss of school and job chances, reputation, well-being, and attorney’s expenses.”
The lawsuit aims to forbid VCA from engaging in such sex-based discrimination going forwards. Unsurprisingly, VCA is not the only organization of Christians that oppose females participating in sports, whether alone or with boys. Tanner Furrh, a member of the Stedfast Baptist Church in Watauga, Texas, who has previously stated that lesbians deserve to die terrible deaths, recently stated that he is against girls participating in any organized sports because it makes them “more masculine.” Are they developing feminine qualities?
In a recent sermon, Furrh questioned. “No, sports don’t help women like that… . There won’t be any structured sports teams for my daughters. For the record, female field hockey players do wear skirts, but it doesn’t matter because fundamentalist opposition to female athletes isn’t truly about preserving “feminity” – like with Christian misogyny in general. Controlling females’ bodies, liberties, and choices in life is the goal.
