What causes the soles of shoes to disintegrate?

When shoes reach an advanced age, the soles may show signs of disintegration. Other single materials are likewise affected by the passage of time. The plasticisers in rubber, for example, progressively diffuse out of the substance. The soles lose flexibility and become stiff and brittle as a result of this. Although ethylene vinyl acetate (EVA), a popular material in the sports shoe business, is not susceptible to hydrolysis, it does have one drawback: it shrinks more quickly when subjected to continual pressures such as walking and running, and so does not return to its previous shape. The little “wrinkles” that the material acquires help to identify this.
