The drama explores all school issues including friendship, love, violence and even “drugs” – Euphoria officially returned with part two this past January. This time, designer Hedi Bivens used even more brands to create a revolution in character building. Revolving around the complex psychological development of teenagers, including Rue Bennet played by Zendaya , Euphoria has the perfect material to recreate the model of the most prominent young fashion trends of the 1990s to 2010s in America.
Euphoria movie fashion: zendaya and 3 aesthetics dominated american schools for three decades
Trending in the ’90s and popular with street dwellers, Grunge represents the classic confronting fashion selves. To fully describe a thorny and “unstable Rue”, designer Hedi Bivens looked to the familiar shopping address of indie artists “secondhand shops”. Away from skateboards, chain necklaces or “noisy” leather combinations, Rue Bennet of Zendaya in Euphoria is a girly but “underground” with a graphic t-shirt, baggy pants and sneakers .
Bivens explains that the iconography of the costumes is more focused in the second part. Rue has realized that living forever in a hoodie is not a positive attitude. In part one, the hoodie is a reminder of the relationship with the late father. To get rid of that protective shield, she improvises with high-end vintage items “needlessly” like her own lifestyle. Starting with Jean Paul Gaultier ‘s waistcoat , then Roberto Cavalli’s plaid pants, etc. Bivens is scouring everywhere for dusty clothes and giving Zendaya a bit of a Hippie vibe.
In Euphoria , from Cassie, Maddy to Lexi, all are passionate dancers at the Y2K party . In contrast to the strong and unpredictable Rue, the remaining “pink balls” unleash themselves in ultra-short and tight designs. Hedi Bivens also shows off his ability to “customize” his character with the graphic prints, checkered patterns and pleated skirts featured in the girls’ wardrobe.
Not as glamorous and dazzling as the eras of Paris Hilton or Mean Girls , Euphoria’s palette is softer to depict the dark and heavy problems in the character’s psyche. Usually blue, pink and rarely red. Leopard skin motifs, mesh shirts or independent designers are also noticed and used by Hedi Bivens for his “players”. However, the only thing 2000 that hasn’t really come back to life in Euphoria is the low- cut design , perhaps because the film’s wardrobe needs to be balanced when mixed with the ’90s and 2010s.
Hedi Bivens went through the streets, to every store and to many shopping sites to bring Twee fashion from TikTok into the movie. As a typical aesthetic trend in the 2010s, Twee is often associated with girly girls who love classics. Midi skirts, A-line skirts, flared dresses, puffy sleeves, ballet shoes are what you see in them and also Lexi played by Maude Apatow.
In contrast to Y2K, Twee is quite tolerant and accepts anything that you consider comfortable like tights or flat shoes. In addition, the Peter Pan collar or romantic pleated detail is considered to represent the desire to be loved of the dreamy girls in the film.
