On Monday, Frances Tiafoe defeated Rafael Nadal in the fourth round of the US Open. In Arthur Ashe Stadium, the four-time US Open champion was defeated by the American 4-6 6-4 4-6 3-6. Unquestionably, it was Tiafoe’s biggest and most significant victory thus far in his short career.
At the US Open, Frances Tiafoe shocks Rafael Nadal in the fourth round
For Nadal, his squad, and his international fans, the defeat is a tremendous letdown. It wasn’t who he lost to or how it transpired; rather, it was the chance to win a Grand Slam, which would have given him a record-breaking 23rd Grand Slam. This appeared to be Nadal’s best opportunity to win one final championship in New York given the absence of Djokovic and Zverev
the exits of Medvedev and Tsitsipas, and the ridiculously in-form Kyrgios on the other side of the draw. Having said that, the absence of one player presents a chance for another. Tiafoe made the most of this opportunity, played superbly, and now has a strong chance to win the first Grand Slam of his career.
Both players controlled the opening six games of the match with reasonable ease. The opening exchanges between Nadal and Tiafoe resembled the opening rounds of a Heavyweight Title fight. Tiafoe secured the first and only break point of the set at 3-3 in the opening game. The Spaniard made a forehand error as a result of the American’s ripping backhand return up the middle of the court. In 55 minutes, Tiafoe was able to win the first set 6-4 by holding his next two service games.
In order to take nearly ten minutes off the court after the first set, Nadal combined a medical timeout with his allocated three minutes to change into a new uniform. Although it appears that he had tape applied to both wrists, it raises the possibility that Nadal was attempting to stifle the 24-year-old American’s momentum.
Nevertheless, throughout the majority of the next set, the two men continued to play consistent service games. In the first nine games of the second set, no break-point possibilities were available. 20 of of 25 of Nadal’s serve points were won. Tiafoe, sixteen of 19. At 5-4 and with the American serving to stay in the set, Nadal, as he so frequently does, threw in the towel.
Tiafoe double-failed on his second break and set point of the match. 1 hour and 43 minutes in, 6-4 4-6. It appeared to everyone watching that this match was going the distance at this point. The third set got underway very much like the first two. The first three service games of the set were easily handled by Nadal and Tiafoe.
When the score was 3-3 and the Spaniard was serving, Tiafoe became quite combative. At 30-40 in the game, Tiafoe crushed a crisp backhand winner up the line, allowing him to convert his first and only break point of the contest. He kept the set’s final two service games, losing only three points in the process.
The American could taste the biggest triumph of his life after leading two sets to one. One of the most dramatic mini-battles of the match occurred in the opening game of the fourth set. After avoiding a break point, Nadal won the point with a backhand winner and a characteristic Rafa yell.
With the score tied at 1-2 in the fourth, three unforced errors by Tiafoe helped Nadal break through the American’s serve. The roof on Arthur Ashe Stadium was gradually shutting during that service break. The American looked to be disturbed by the action, and after the game, he voiced his concerns to the chair umpire. However, Tiafoe appeared to compartmentalize it fast because he seized the opportunity to recover the break.
Tiafoe solidified his break at 2-3 with a tense hold. Through the use of strong first serves and a forehand approach that was aggressive, he survived two break points from the Spaniard. In the following Nadal service game, Tiafoe persisted in his aggressiveness, which allowed him to break the Spaniard’s serve in a nine-point game.
Two service holds separated the Americans from the US Open quarterfinals. Tiafoe gained a 40-love lead over Nadal when serving at 4-3. However, Nadal fought back to a 2-0 lead, just as a 22-time Grand Slam champion would. In order to make it 5-3, Tiafoe maintained his composure, maneuvered Nadal around the court, and then solidified his break with a thunderous 134 MPH serve out wide.
Tiafoe harnessed his energy to finally break Nadal, winning the fourth set 6-3.
What Will Tiafoe Do Next?
In addition to focusing on his quarterfinal match against Andrey Rublev, Tiafoe must give himself and his squad the deserved credit for this triumph. After the biggest success of his career, the last thing he wants to experience is a letdown.
Rublev and Tiafoe have met twice before, dividing the meetings. In the third round of the US Open from the previous year, the American defeated Rublev in a thrilling five-set match. Earlier this year at Indian Wells, Rublev defeated Tiafoe in straight sets.
Since they are both vying to make their maiden Grand Slam semifinal appearance, not much separates these two. Both enjoy using strong groundstrokes to intimidate their opponent around the court. Both of these guys put their hearts on their sleeves, so I anticipate a strong level of enthusiasm from them.
Rublev played for one hour and 26 minutes less than Tiafoe did during their respective quarterfinal matchups. Rublev defeated Cameron Norrie in straight sets earlier on Monday. Expect weariness to maybe play a role in a match that I anticipate to be quite competitive.
