Canadian Olympian who competed in the 200m, I consider all three men heroes of mine. While in college, I wrote a paper about the injustices Norman faced after his return to Australia. Norman died within a year after I spoke with him.

I’ve never known this story. Thank you for sharing, Jared. What a man of uncompromising strength, courage, and integrity. I can’t believe only 18 years ago he was still being ostracized by his country. So very shameful. A lot of good the posthumous apology in 2012 does him… but an apology nonetheless. Would love to see his statue erected at San Jose St next to Carlos & Smith. Fascinating and heartbreaking story. I found out about this story a few days ago. If I had known about it I would have written to Norman too. I hope he was proud of his commitment to his principles. I thought as a country we were past that. One of our best athletes that year was Cathy Freeman OAM. The nations hopes were pinned on her success on the track and she did not disappoint. We had come so far by then. The white Australia policy was long forgotten. Land rights for Indigenous Australians had been fought for and won yet for Norman time stood still. Such a disappointing time in our history.

A great athlete, a great Australian and a GREAT human being! Athletics Australia now recognise 9 October as Peter Norman Day in recognition of his courageous act. It is such a shame that we in Australia didn’t recognise him sooner. Thankfully we now finally have. A statue will be erected in his honour here in Australia I just watched this and never knew this about Peter Norman. Michael as I was getting ready to post about this I ran across your comment above. Thank you for sharing an update to a very sad situation. If I’m not mistaken, Norman was made aware that Carlos and Smith were receiving the statue and was asked if he wanted to be included. He declined, saying “Leave my spot open so others may pose in my absence. They [John Carlos and Tommy Smith] deserve the recognition.” But…..it wasn’t his wish. I also found another article about Peter ‘he declined to be depicted in the installation shortly before his death in 2006. This allows visitors to stand in his spot on the podium, in solidarity with the civil rights movement for years to come’
