The plasticisers in rubber, for example, progressively diffuse out of the substance. The soles lose flexibility and become stiff and brittle as a result of this. Although ethylene vinyl acetate (EVA), a popular material in the sports shoe business, is not susceptible to hydrolysis, it does have one drawback: it shrinks more quickly when subjected to continual pressures such as walking and running, and so does not return to its previous shape.
