Almost every time David Montgomery touched the ball, something positive happened for the Chicago Bears. But as the Bears grew further behind in the second quarter, he rarely had that opportunity. On Sunday night, the Green Bay Packers defeated the Chicago Bears 27-10 after outscoring the Bears 21-0 in the second quarter.
In the Bears’ defeat against the Packers, Montgomery’s effort was insufficient
Montgomery finished with 122 yards on 15 attempts despite having just one carry during that pivotal second quarter. Bears quarterback Justin Fields stated, “I don’t know what he ate today, but he was running the ball crazy.”
For the first time since 2018, the Bears were ahead of the Packers in the division rankings going into the game, but they lost the chance to put the three-time defending NFC North champions down early. Instead, they suffered their sixth straight defeat against the Packers. It’s annoying, said Montgomery.
On their opening drive of the game, Montgomery, Fields, and the rest of the Bears’ offense made it appear simple. For the following hour or two, everything became unbearably challenging. Midway through the first quarter, Fields’ 3-yard touchdown keeper gave the Bears a 7-3 lead after a seven-play, 71-yard drive.
Montgomery remarked, “The o-line did a nice job generating some space, and I kind of just hit what I saw.”
In that series, Montgomery had four carries for 38 yards. For the remainder of the first half, he only managed one run for minus-5 yards as sacks and penalties put the Bears in long-yardage situations and prevented them from carrying the ball.
The Bears wouldn’t get another first down after that drive until there were approximately eight minutes left in the third quarter. By then, they were down 24 hours a day.
Three consecutive possessions ended in three-and-outs for the Bears, who then ran just one play on their subsequent series before the first half’s time ran out. Following their touchdown, the Bears only managed 13 yards in the last 10 plays of the first half.
The Bears coach Matt Eberflus stated, “We had that first drive that was terrific, scoring that touchdown, and then we had three drives right there where we went a little behind the sticks with penalties or tackle for losses or that type of thing. “In that way, you’ve got to keep ahead of the sticks.”
Because Fields was nearly 3 yards past the line of scrimmage when the pass was thrown, the offense’s best play during that entire stretch—a 31-yard connection to former Packers receiver Equanimeous St. Brown—was likely wiped out.
Fields scored the only touchdown for the Bears but only completed 7 of 11 passes for 70 yards and an interception. Darnell Mooney was only able to make one catch for a loss of four yards.
As the Bears began to give the ball to Montgomery more frequently and he ran for 89 yards on 10 carries, they still posed a threat to turn the game into a contest. Montgomery has a history of success at Lambeau Field; in a 41–25 loss to Green Bay in 2020, he rushed for 103 yards and had a touchdown reception.

However, they once more fell short.
When replays revealed that Fields went down before stretching his arm across the goal line, the Bears’ apparent 6-yard touchdown run by Fields was overturned as Chicago trailed 24-10 in the fourth quarter.
Even while it’s hard to fault the Bears for counting on the bruising Fields to try to score himself from less than a yard away on the game’s pivotal play, they once again chose not to throw the ball to Montgomery.
Fields battled Green Bay’s Preston Smith and Jarran Reed as he attempted to cross the goal line. After a replay check, officials determined that Fields was stopped just outside the goal line, and the call stood.
The Bears wouldn’t make another threat.
Regarding the fourth-down stop, Montgomery remarked, “I saw a touchdown.” “I was direct across from the ball. However, I wouldn’t anticipate anything less. We simply need to make sure that we put it in the next time since we don’t have a home-field advantage at Soldier Field. No asterisks are used.
