With Jimmy Garoppolo at the helm, one of the 49ers’ offense’s main weaknesses is the absence of a downfield passing game. That will change if the quarterback gets his way during what may be his final season as San Francisco’s starting quarterback.
In 2022, may Jimmy Garoppolo make more downfield throws?
Garoppolo said he had more flexibility when he took over for the final five games of 2017 and would want to see that freedom return this time around. He made this statement during a press conference on Thursday.
Garoppolo said of moving the ball down the field, “I’d love it.” Yes, there are clearly many factors involved, but I enjoy performing that kind of work. In 2017, there was a sense of freedom between me, the receivers, and the tight ends. A challenging offense is created when you combine that with offensive talent and a quarterback.
With five starts over that five-game span, Garoppolo averaged a career-high 308.4 yards per game while completing 67.4% of his passes. His most recent high was last season when he averaged 254 yards per game.
9.0 percent of Garoppolo’s attempts, according to Pro Football Focus, were deep passes (20-plus yards beyond the line of scrimmage). On throws of medium depth, he had a percentage of 32%. (10-19 yards beyond the line of scrimmage).
In 2019, the percentages fell to 6.6% for deep throws and 25.8% for intermediate throws. His deep throws decreased to 7.6% last year, while his middle depth throws increased to 24.3 percent.
While Garoppolo acknowledged that the quarterback felt more at liberty after his Week 2 relieving performance, he refrained from predicting that the offense would continue to function as it did on Sunday. Nevertheless, it appears that he was advocating for it.
Garoppolo responded, “I don’t know, that’s a good question. I don’t know, the more freedom a quarterback has, obviously they play better, they are more confident, and good things will happen. I think we’ll see that as we move forwards.
In a tiny sample size of 19 throws on Sunday, he made deep throws on 9.5 percent of his tries. On 19% of his tries, he reached medium depth.
What therefore altered between 2017 and 2021?
As I was still learning the offense in 2017, Garoppolo explained, “Kyle would call some plays and I wouldn’t know exactly how to read it, but you’d kind of figure it out as you went.” “I start to figure out what Kyle’s thinking and vice versa as I understand more about the offense,” said the play caller. “But there’s definitely just some back and forth between the play caller and quarterback.”
It’s intriguing that Garoppolo attributed his more frequent downfield looks during his brief 2017 stay to a lack of familiarity. The 49ers may not intend to drive the ball down the field more.
Given that he missed all of OTAs and training camp while recovering from surgery on his throwing shoulder, it might come into play once more, at least early on in his new starting job.
After the game on Sunday, he admitted to running a few plays for the first time.
Garoppolo told reporters after Sunday’s victory, “Yeah, it was just some different stuff, but I mean, I’ve been a backup before, you don’t get the reps during the week.” Just practice your mental exercises and try to maximize the situation.
It will be interesting to watch how Garoppolo changes over the course of the season’s final 15 games in 2022. In order for him to return to the deep and medium passing rates he achieved in 2019 and 2021, it would make sense that he reverts to some of the factors that caused him to throw deep more frequently in 2017 as he adjusts.
Actually, it might benefit the 49ers and head coach Kyle Shanahan to allow Garoppolo to throw deep passes more frequently. With 13 touchdown passes and 11 interceptions in his 47 games with San Francisco, he has completed a respectable 38.5 percent of his long passes. Although he has been incredibly effective on medium and short throws, the 49ers’ offense lacks that downfield component.
Of course, since his contract ends after this year, Garoppolo might decide to throw the ball more frequently rather than attempting to stay in the offense. He makes it plain that he wants to, so if Shanahan creates some opportunities, we can anticipate the seasoned signal caller to make some throws we haven’t seen him make in the previous five years. It might not be a significant change, but it might be sufficient to help the 49ers and Garoppolo get over the finish line.
