Since taking the helm of Fendi’s womenswear division, Kim Jones has always been interested in the brand’s archival designs, especially those under Karl Lagerfeld. For the Spring Summer 2023 collection, the designer continues to maintain that spirit, and at the same time “blows” into the breath of the times designs with the popular Y2K trend.

It can be said that Fendi entered the Y2K game relatively late compared to the explosion of this trend in the past time. But once the “player” has “started the battle”, the graves can only take their hats off in admiration. No longer the cold, dark colors typical of Fendi, at first glance, the most attractive element of the collection is its beautiful color palette.
Neutral or cool tones stretch over many brighter and softer shades such as beige, camel hair, caramel brown, warm gray, white, etc. Stand out in that background is the sudden appearance. but sweet of neon green, mint green, earth pink, and cornflower blue. The delicate combination of these two color fields provides an extremely attractive visual experience while creating a highlight with the liberal Y2K spirit while maintaining the inherent elegance and simplicity of Fendi.
The brand’s artistic sense of the harmony between sophistication and utility, elegance and youth is conveyed in soft silk pants combined with turtleneck sweaters, accompanied by sturdy loafers. The graceful bodycon dress is embellished with vibrant colors and bold cutout details. The long-sleeve dress with stiff shoulders is softened by the feminine A-line.
The collection also includes the “hits” of the Y2K trend such as silk raver pants with “rebellious” low-rise waist, thin cardigans, split skirts, sexy sleeveless shirt designs, mini portable bags, etc. Even, Fendi’s popular Peekaboo bag has now been “improved” with the addition of a chain, and miniature Fendi First bags wrapped in thinner chains look as pretty as a piece of jewelry.
With this latest collection, Fendi not only focuses on sophisticated color palettes or trendy designs, but the mix of materials also contributes significantly to shaping the brand’s luxury. Youthful, modern features are reproduced through indifferent chiffon fabrics.
Meanwhile, textured layers of classic leather, silk, fur, and soft cashmere help elevate the already glamorous and liberal Y2K aesthetic into ever more luxurious and elegant. Kim Jones also did not use too many texture prints in this collection. The designs are mostly solid colors, highlighted through sharp cuts and designs, to best convey Fendi’s trendy minimalist spirit.
The Fendi Spring Summer 2023 collection is not only influenced by the Y2K trend, but it is also strongly inspired by the fashion spirit of Karl Lagerfeld – who has been with the brand for half his life. That spirit is expressed through the combination of the interlocking “FF” (Fun Fur) logo (designed by Karl Lagerfeld in 2000) with floral embroidery taken from archival prints in 1996. And just like the designer.
Kim Jones knows how to create designs with a distinctly contemporary spirit, but still with the luxury and elegance of the brand’s history. Most importantly, they are also costumes that meet the needs of today’s women, both with high-class aesthetics and still have to be extremely convenient.
