According to a team announcement, the Edmonton Oilers have signed defenseman Darnell Nurse to an eight-year contract extension. Nurse’s new contract will pay him $74 million over four years, with an average annual salary of $9.25 million.

After Seth Jones, Erik Karlsson, Drew Doughty, and Zach Werenski, Nurse will be the NHL’s fifth highest paid defenseman. The Oilers defenceman is coming off a strong season in which he set a new career high with 16 goals and 20 assists in 56 games. Nurse also placed first among defenseman in even strength goals (15) and averaged 25:38 minutes per night. Nurse has spent his whole career with the Oilers, having been selected seventh overall in the 2013 NHL Draft. Nurse has 157 points (45 goals and 112 assists) in 406 regular season games throughout that period. The 26-year-old is fifth in goals, 11th in games played, and 12th in assists among defenseman.
