After four years of living with fashion in the design department of a university, the number of times I really dressed up to school is counted on one finger.
Bling pressure: on the shoulders of fashion students, there is a “pressure to dress well”
In the imagination of the majority, a person who pursues the fashion industry will look stylish and sophisticated. It’s impossible like Cher Horowitz in Clueless to own a couple of parts of Elle Woods in Legally Blonde. Fashion students read every trend, collect trendy items and turn the school into fashion week. Even with the ability to do so, the pressure of dressing well every day used to haunt and shy me.
When I was first in college, I was disappointed with myself when I received a review of my style as “not fashionable” from a friend from a different major. I tried to wake up earlier and get ready for school, but it just couldn’t become a habit.
It is often said that “the lobby of the university with the fashion industry is always sparkling like a catwalk”, that is only true on a few special days. Most of the week, we can’t ignore the deadline no matter what we wear! With an average temperature of 27 degrees Celsius in Saigon, I would melt myself if I put on thick and layered clothes to stand among the countless fabrics waiting to be “dissected”. I would hold myself back if I chose high heels instead of flats in the process of setting up and using the sewing machine…
However, although beautiful despite taking away comfort and flexibility, for clothing enthusiasts like us, it is still a way to “recharge” energy after a series of days of “struggling” with the project. The school where I study every year, majoring in Fashion, selects more than 50 students, totaling 4 courses, there are more than 200 students – 200 different personalities in one school. So, what do fashion students really wear to both freely manipulate and liberate their ego?
With friends, go to Hoang Hoa Tham market to hunt for clothes, and Ban Co market to hunt for accessories (bags, hats, shoes, watches, …) A new shop has become our daily “schedule”. Some of my favorite secondhand stores include Fat Thôn Village with a bold Hong Kong style; 2. abnormal with charming vintage corsets, etc. Instagram shops are indispensable in the following list of fashion students. Like any other believer, we are also looking for one-of-a-kind beauty and are always clearly aware of environmental issues.
Local brands with moderate prices and multi-style always receive enthusiastic support from fashion students. I have observed a lot of friends who are both “cool” and cute with any studio costumes, as fun as sweets with TARTAN designs, or sometimes returning to minimalism with apparel, etc. Recently, Band Flea Market is “catching the eye” of the student union around me because of its creative color play and witty message.
Besides, sustainability is also a plus. Brands that focus on the apparel industry’s impact on the environment really win our hearts. Unique items made from rags of Moi Dien appear regularly in the lecture hall.
Personal projects as “brain children” of fashion students. Instead of storing it in a corner of the closet, I often try to combine it with everyday outfits to confirm that art can also be applied. The project fully meets the criteria of being innovative, and unique and is the pride of each student, above all, wearing the clothes you design is also an effective way of communication.
Before graduating with a fashion major, I never wanted to neglect myself and destroy the imagination of outsiders about my “vanity” world, where there are many unique and flashy styles. But similar to the show industry, the backstage is a working area of mind and craftsmanship, where creativity is sublimated and thanks to that, I can receive lots of reviews about how I look. at the end of a future show!
