Early versions of cat-eye glasses appeared in the late 20s. At that time, they were used mainly as an aid in astronomy. The story of this eyewear began completely by accident while filmmaker and designer Altina Schinasi Miranda walked across a street on New York’s Fifth Avenue. Randomly browsing a sunglasses store, she felt herself drawn to the frames. Unfortunately, most of them are made for men, and in that moment Schinasi’s creative inspiration prompted her to create a glamorous style of glasses specifically for women. The first design by Schinasi was inspired by the Venetian Harlequin mask and so cat-eye glasses are sometimes called Harlequin glasses.
Initially, the sharp lines of the glasses did not create much sympathy and were repeatedly rejected by major fashion eyewear brands . Not because of that, the owner of the design decided to give up, Schinasi continued to try his luck at an eyewear store on an American boulevard. Unexpectedly, her once estranged “brain children” became a best-selling item than ever. The ability to “make money” of Harlequin glasses helped Schinasi create his own brand in the late 1930s.
After many years of World War II, the cat-eye glasses trend really exploded among women. These small glasses have been diversified with many new materials, interwoven with more sophisticated motifs or dotted lines of diamante, and star shape, … and is focused on the tail.
At this time, thanks to the prosperity of the film industry, Harlequin glasses have the opportunity to adorn famous names. In particular, the attractive beauty of Hollywood Cinderella – Marilyn Monroe combined with the arrogance of glasses has made it a “dream item” of all classes of women from politicians to housewives.
