The rivalry between the Boston Red Sox and the New York Yankees may be one that everyone outside of those cities is sick of hearing or seeing, but a three-game series this week has postseason ramifications. The teams will play a doubleheader on Tuesday, with the first game starting at 1:05 p.m. ET. Neither team is guaranteed a postseason berth.
As The Yankees and Red Sox Begin a Crucial Series
In the AL East, the Red Sox are 3.5 games behind the Tampa Bay Rays, while the Yankees are 5.5 games behind. A wild-card matchup between the Yankees and the Red Sox would be exciting, but it would require both teams to perform admirably. The Red Sox have clinched a postseason berth, but they are only a half-game ahead of the Oakland Athletics for the first wild-card slot. The Yankees are 1.5 games behind the A’s, while the Toronto Blue Jays are 4 games back.
The Red Sox and Yankees may be left out if the Rays and A’s maintain playing well and the Blue Jays (or Seattle Mariners, 5th in the wild card) go hot. Perhaps just one of them will survive. That is why their face-to-face encounters are so crucial. At BetMGM, the Red Sox are -150 in the first game of Tuesday’s doubleheader and -135 in the second. In both games, it’s a good bet to back the Yankees. It’s difficult to think they won’t be swept. The Red Sox are coming off a sweeping of the Baltimore Orioles. The Orioles have never been able to beat anyone. Before it, Boston had gone 3-11 in a row. The Yankees are 15-5 in their previous 20 games, thanks to several trade deadline transactions. They’ve been on a roll lately, winning three games in a row. It’s hard to see why the Yankees are underdogs in both of their home games. Perhaps this three-game set will be their last chance to qualify for the playoffs.
