The Oscar-nominated actor discusses his “borderline Method” approach and rigorous preparation for playing the iconic singer.
Known for his mesmerizing performances in movies like “Call Me By Your Name” and “Dune,” Timothée Chalamet is about to embark on one of his most difficult jobs to date: playing music legend Bob Dylan in an upcoming biopic. Chalamet talked candidly in a recent interview about his “borderline Method” approach and rigorous preparation for playing the iconic singer-songwriter.
“A Complete Unknown,” which was directed by James Mangold (“Walk the Line,” “Ford v Ferrari”), centers on Dylan’s crucial formative years and his contentious transition from folk to electric guitar. It was both thrilling and intimidating for Chalamet to try to capture the spirit of such a complicated and significant person.
Chalamet said, “It was a terrifying experience,” “Dylan is a force of nature, a poet, a cultural icon, and more than just a musician. I was under tremendous pressure to treat him fairly.
Five Years of Planning and Using the “Borderline Method”
With five years to prepare for the part, Chalamet took advantage of the opportunity to fully immerse himself in Dylan’s universe. As a self-described “devoted disciple in the Church of Bob,” he devoured his poetry, music, movies, and interviews.
“I wanted to understand his genius, his rebellious spirit, his vulnerability,” said Chalamet. “I wanted to get inside his head and feel what he was feeling during those formative years.”
Chalamet used the “borderline Method” to do this, making it difficult to distinguish between Dylan’s identity and his own. He worked with a voice coach to mimic Dylan’s unique singing technique, picked up the guitar and harmonica, and even took on his accent and demeanor.
“I was constantly listening to Dylan’s music, reading his poetry, watching his interviews,” said Chalamet. “I even began speaking and dressing like him in my day-to-day interactions. It consumed everything.
Obstacles and Achievements
Playing Dylan presented several difficulties for Chalamet, especially when it came to imitating his distinct guitar playing and singing approach. To hone these elements of his performance, he put in endless hours working with a guitar instructor and a vocal coach.
Chalamet remarked, “Dylan’s voice is so distinctive, so raw, and powerful,” “It took months of practice to even come close to emulating it.”
Chalamet felt the experience to be immensely fulfilling in spite of the difficulties. He enjoyed the chance to explore the thoughts of one of his favorite people and make his story come to life on TV.
“It was an honor to play Bob Dylan,” Chalamet exclaimed. “He’s a true artist, and I hope I’ve done him justice.”
The Much Awaited Biopic
In the film business, “A Complete Unknown” is creating a lot of excitement, and many people are expecting Chalamet to deliver another Oscar-caliber performance. In addition, Benedict Cumberbatch, Elle Fanning, and Monica Barbaro star in the movie.
Given Chalamet’s commitment to the part and Mangold’s history with music biopics, it appears that “A Complete Unknown” could be a major awards contender.
