In Montreal, Tiffany celebrates the Lunar New Year with her family every year, with red envelopes, crabs and fish, but no ao dai (until last year) and the sound of Spring in every street (until this year).

Books transported me to another world and gave me a temporary refuge when my parents became strict. I understand because they both grew up in different eras.
My mother was born in North Vietnam and emigrated during the war. I can’t imagine the hardships she had to go through when starting a new life in a foreign country, a much more open Western society. So is my father. He immigrated to Canada at the age of 35. If I were in that situation, I don’t think it would be easy for me to change the people and the expectations of the surrounding environment.”
Tiffany said she had read and re-read Ocean Vuong’s work. “Also a kid of Asian descent, he reminds me of what it feels like to be a minority in the West.”
“Sure. Books affect everything you see and touch in life. But music and movies don’t feel right to me. Many people think I listen to Jazz and Symphony every day, but no, I listen to Rap and hip-hop. I watch movies that are a bit ‘weird’, devouring scientific and psychological genres, etc. For example, the Japanese film Old Boy.”
Each type of popular culture can represent every aspect of the same person. That’s why Tiffany started doing YouTube alongside Instagram to reach viewers with a different side of her personality: “funny, loud and silly”, she describes herself.

This Lunar New Year, Tiffany Lai enjoys the New Year’s atmosphere in the most Asian way with her family and friends in Hong Kong. Spending time going to temples, fasting, trying out traditional customs, etc. This is the first full-fledged New Year of an Asian-Canadian family.
