Lewis Hamilton came dangerously near to being seriously injured two weeks ago when Red Bull driver Max Verstappen’s car clipped the top of the British world champion’s car. Hamilton has now questioned whether Verstappen is beginning to feel the strain of his first title challenge, but the Dutchman has dismissed Hamilton’s comments.
Max verstappen is under pressure, says lewis hamilton: “there’s a lot riding on it.”
Lewis Hamilton has questioned whether the pressure of a title race is affecting Max Verstappen’s performance in Formula One. The two have had a tumultuous relationship recently, with the Red Bull kid claiming to be the favourite for the 2022 title. The 23-year-old Dutch driver leads the seven-time champion by five points. The Russian Grand Prix takes place this weekend, two weeks after the two drivers collided at Monza, with Verstappen’s car clipping the top of Hamilton’s. For the upcoming race, Verstappen has been issued a three-place grid penalty. “Ultimately, we all have to be wise, and realise that there will come a point when you are not going to make the corner,” Hamilton told Sky Sports. It all boils down to whether or not you will live to fight another day for the next corner. As you gain experience, you’ll see that it’s not all won in one corner. I’m hoping there won’t be any more occurrences this year.”
Despite this, Hamilton believes Verstappen will continue to be aggressive. “I don’t expect that to happen since he’s never done it before,” Hamilton remarked. “And I believe that’s how I’ll approach things: not expecting anything and simply trying to make the space that’s required.” I’m confident he will, and we’ll continue to learn from him.” “I know what it’s like to compete for your first championship; there’s a lot on the line and a lot relying on it,” he said. “I’m well aware of the pressures and experiences that come with it,” Hamilton concluded. “During that period, your eagerness… you go through a lot of various experiences and feelings.” It was challenging, it was intense, I was experiencing a wide range of emotions, and I didn’t always handle it well. That’s to be anticipated; when you’re working in a large team, there’s a lot of pressure, a lot of self-expectation, and a strong drive to win. That is something I understand and empathise with. I am confident that we will continue to improve as a result of this. “Because I’ve lived here for a long time, it’s a lot simpler to deal with.”
I was really young my first year and lacked the tools to deal with the strain that was placed on me. It’s a lot different [now] for me “.. Verstappen joked in response to the comments, dismissing them: “I can’t sleep because I’m so nervous! Fighting for a title is unpleasant, and I despise it…” If you know me, you’ll know that I’m not concerned about any of those things and that I’m not disturbed by them.” It’s the nicest feeling in the world to have a fantastic car in which you can compete every weekend. It makes no difference whether you’re leading a championship or not. “Those remarks just serve to demonstrate that he has no idea who I am. That’s great; I don’t need to know everything about him. I just concentrate on myself; I love being out in front, and I hope we can continue to do so for a long time.”
