As a PoC or Black you will constantly have to proof that you know how to fit in and As Its best you will be noticed as the exception to the rule I was never trying to be German, I’m very happy and proud of who I am and wouldn’t want to fake something so ridiculous. I was always treated with respect. that was precisely Christina’s point… you were always perceived as “other.” Although you may have been treated kindly and not persecuted, that’s not the point the interviewees are talking about. They’re saying that even if they were born and raised in Germany, they are not perceived as truly German. Also, did you not hear the woman explain in the video that even though your experience may be different than hers, you should still believe her story as factual and legitimate?
Further, just because you lived there for a year does not make you any kind of authority on the issue, as you imply that the German government was wrong to designate an official to be dedicated to the issue. It’s real, whether you saw it or not. I’m a white American of Germanic descent and I used to live in Berlin, yet my eyes were open to the systemic racism while I was living there.
