Imagine you had a dog. You got him as a puppy 9 years ago – and you’ve loved him ever since. Over the years, you noticed that his personality started to change a little here and there, but you still loved him – he’s your dog after all – and for these changes, there’s still a lot of him that that persists from the beginning. This Game of thrones episode is like taking your dog, strapping him into the world’s largest firework rocket, and setting it off. You will enjoy the spectacle, sure – but you’d also realize that your dog is now dead. I don’t hate Arya being the one to kill the NK. Not today arya stark game of thrones shirt I’m OK with “subverting expectations” on that, provided it was done a little better. But this was Jon’s fight. If he wasn’t going to be the one to kill the NK, he should’ve been part of the setup somehow. Either he kills the Dragon or kills some White Walkers, or something.
8 seasons of build-up with Jon as the guy leading the charge toward The Great War, and he honestly does nothing of consequence in the episode. Heck, hardly anyone does. People had all these theories about Bran vs. the NK, warg vs. warg, seer vs. seer. And Bran wargs a few birds. People had all these theories about how it would be the crew with the Valyrian Steel swords — Jamie, Brienne, Jon, Arya, Jorah — taking on the White Walker generals. Nope. No one except Arya even fights a White Walker. This feels like The Last Jedi, where the “twist” is that nothing ever meant anything, which is trash. Subverting expectation is easy. Doing it in a way that is narratively satisfying is hard. D&D took the easy route. Very disappointing.
