I think the underlying issue, in the situations he describes, is a lack of respect on a core level. A feeling of elitism at a fundamental level. Racism, along with misogyny, is seeing yourself as fundamentally better than not just another person, not just another class or another group, but an entire huge population of people living in extremely varied circumstances, classes, backgrounds, etc. They can’t even see the absurdity of such a thing, and the outward friendliness is a cheap and easy cover for it.
