I had roommates in college who, upon learning the empty bed in our quad would be filled by a Japanese exchange student, voiced their displeasure to the Resident Director, I served my country what did you do US air force shirt as well as in the room with me. They used numerous slurs while they did this. When our new roommate arrived, they were polite to him, but they hated him behind his back. My roommates were racists.

They say things like that all the time. Its the assumption that white is the default and the closer you are to that the more they are willing to accept you. POC deal with this all the time. That your race is in fact less than, but for you they will make an exception. People are nice to and friendly with animals, it does not mean I see my cat as my equal. I think there are degrees to things and it’s important to see that and act accordingly. I served my country what did you do US air force shirt A guy who spends his life using the n word, well that’s bad, but it’s not the same as one that actually goes out and mass kills and lynchs. It’s not to condone racism and offenses, but to fight mostly harmless (jerk, but harmless nonetheless)
people with harshness and shunning and hatred It’s likely that then they’ll be angrier and more violent. We humans have a natural, biological tendency to protect ourselves and that includes anger towards our attackers. That’s why it’s best to talk these matters with a calm mind, and not apply disproportionate punishment. When we understand our actions and their implicance we feel guilty for our deeds. On many cases of sheer insensitivity/jackassery that is enough; it is punishment and it teaches. On others punishment may be needed but not so much that it will trigger a defensive reaction instead. Bigoted, jerky, and arrogant, we are all still very frail creatures. Here is where I find the crux of our disagreement. You’ve identified that there are racists beyond violent racists. But, you do seem to be defining racism as action. Racism isn’t only in action. It is in thinking, as well.
