When you say something out loud, it registers in your brain in a different way. If you consciously accept that what is being said isn’t ok and you are intent on not saying it, I ride hor ses because they dont make dragons anymore game of thrones shirt when you hear words you have been told are racist spoken out loud after deciding consciously not to say them, after a while, they will register as unkind or inappropriate.

This. Yes! As a queer woman I get used as an example of how so and so isn’t homophobic, because they know me. You can’t do that. My existence shouldn’t give you the license to do or say homophobic things. Of course I hear all marginalized people used this way. It makes me sad, sometimes kinda mad. Being a racist by promoting racism. People deny being racist, but I have never used racist words. I simply don’t think them. I ride hor ses because they dont make dragons anymore game of thrones shirt If you ever use them, it’s because they are in your head for a reason. I know these types of people. They are oblivious to the ignorance of their words. And when you say something about the harm their words cause, they say, “Are you calling me a racist? I am not a racist.”. Yes, yes you are. I have severed ties to family members over my inability to look the other way anymore. My conscience is clear.

This is so true. Applies to gender-based discrimination as well. I have heard lots of sexist comments in the workplace from people who wouldn’t consider themselves sexist. Words can be a form of discrimination, and are the root of overt acts of oppression. Let’s be careful to practice loving, kind and respectful speech and speak out when we hear the opposite. This is so important to creating a more diverse and inclusive culture at work and at home and in the world. Living in the south I think this is the norm here. The majority of people are this way at best and there are a lot of still blatant racist of all colors here. I work with many black women than have admitted to me that they see it in their families the same as I do mine. It’s something that needs a lot of work here. I hope I am teaching my sons better!
