I have a former boss who, on the outside, was a great person. He and his wife do all sorts of volunteer work, he helped employees with anything they needed. His wife was worried about me hauling my daughter in my car that needed worked on and paid for a shop to come pick up my car during work one day, fix it, and bring it back before I had to go home. But the longer I worked there, the more they’d say in front of me, I just took a DNA test turns out I’m 100% that bitch shirt and I learned that they are some of the most racist, homophobic, sexist (even his wife!), bigots I’ve ever met and I couldn’t wait until I didn’t depend on them for a job so I could tell them how awful they are. So sorry you went through that. I learned a long time ago “good deeds don’t erase shame or sin” Aka giving back doesn’t erase bad behavior.

I know racism exists everywhere but when I went to college in the Bible belt I could not believe the overt racism I saw down there, it was just like this man is talking about except the people behaving like that were 18-22 yr olds. I had so many arguments with people about their racist behavior, they would act friendly when a person of color was present but would not hesitate to say the n-word or tell a racist joke. When I would tell them they were racist, the majority of them would say, “I have a black friend, I’m not racist”. I would ask if they’d still be friends if their black friend heard how they talk about ppl of color. It would & still does infuriate me.
