when i was 10, i had cook for myself and my older sister, do my laundry, do my homework, get my things ready for school the next day, iron my clothes, clean my room, etc. At that i age I knew how to fix holes in my clothes. All while dealing with debilitating migraines and a tumor in my leg, removed 4 times and chemo implant. It’s how you are raised. I pretty much had no choice. My mother wasn’t very nuturing and wouldn’t cook for us. Your children are blessed not to have to struggle like this, but American children are not immune to this type of life.

I get it. I was raised in a generation like that, too. When my little brother and I were the same age as my kids are now, we would take a bus from our elementary school to a seedy area in downtown Oakland. Walk down to BART station and ride BART to San Francisco. Then we’d walk up to the MUNI station and take a bus to Noe Valley and then cross the street and walk to our dads house. I won’t even let my kids walk to the end of our block So yes, it’s all in how you are raised, but these are different times, as well. Our mami worked 2 jobs and raised 4 kids on her own. We grew up fast out of necessity. Now I’m a stay at home mom and I do too much for my kids. I know I have to change that, but at the same time, it’s scary! Not scary to trust their judgment, but the people they will encounter out there.
