I live in MN where the bridge collapse happened in 2007. I still hold my breath when crossing because it’s engrained in my memory. I forget about the millions of times I have crossed it before it happened (and since). Traumatic things stay with us and so do wonderful things. Ain’t no daddy like a crawdaddy shirt Your job as a teacher is to strive to be the wonderful one so a child looks back at their school years with fondness and remembers how much you cared about them rather than how much self esteem you took away.

So in her mind it was ok because she wasn’t yelling at me specifically. I also had a bad college professor who told me to give up because “if I didn’t understand chemistry by now, I never will”. Just like all professions, there are bad apples. There are horrible nurses, doctors, police officers, customer service people, business owners, engineers, parents, etc but there are also ones that are beautiful and take their jobs very seriously. Ain’t no daddy like a crawdaddy shirt Even though I have never personally met a horrific child abuser doesn’t mean they don’t exist. And just because you haven’t met mediocre or horrible teachers doesn’t mean they don’t exist. Unfortunately, in my experience, the ones that are mediocre are the ones we forget about when we look back.
As the mom of 3 kids on IEPs, you would be amazed how much a struggling child hears, sees and feels even if not said directly to them. It still chops a piece off their confidence. When doing IEP meetings ask what qualities the parents see that are good so you can seek those behaviors out. I walk in the room for meetings and hold my breath preparing to get horrible news even though most of the time, it’s a productive meeting. But I can tell in the first 30 seconds if mama bear needs to come out or if the teacher has taken the time to learn as much as possible about their strengths, interests, and weaknesses.
