You may not know about David Koma but you certainly know the Koma Girl. A series of A-list stars such as Taylor Swift, Lady Gaga, Ariana Grande, Dua Lipa, Olivia Rodrigo, Jung Ho Yeon, etc. have all worn David’s unique designs. Since she was only 15 years old, this talented designer has been able to sculpt the female figure in an unexpected and animated way.
David Koma is a Georgian, born and raised in the capital, Tbilisi. He showed his passion for fashion when he was only 8 years old, and once participated in a design competition when he turned 15. In 2009, after graduating from Central Saint Martins, David worked as an independent designer
Start your own personal brand. He used to work at Mugler from 2013 to 2017 as Art Director. Once he had established a mainstream style, David began to focus on expanding his own brand. He has encroached on the field of shoes and sportswear but still retains the evocative and sexy design characteristics.
It is no coincidence that David Koma’s creations are loved by many of the most powerful celebrities in the United States, including Beyoncé, Michelle Obama, and Anne Hathaway. Most of the costumes he creates are geared towards femininity combined with a bit of cuteness.
As someone with a deep understanding of the structure and shape of women, David always uses that to sketch shapes that are deeply linked to body contours. The femininity he created for Mugler and his own brand is also different. If Mugler’s approach to maturity is expressed through sharp cuts, David Koma’s own brand is more playful in texture and color.
David’s store staples are body-hugging cut-out dresses. The designs are based on the manifesto to enhance the latent beauty of the female body that David has set forth since the first step in his career. However, after four years with Mugler, it is understandable that his later collections have also been influenced more or less by the piercing patterns that carry the brand’s soul. He also “enriches” his fashion treasure by adding many feather details, using sequins and silk satin on a regular basis, portraying a youthful and gorgeous image.
At every red carpet or big event, it’s not hard to see at least one artist wearing David Koma’s designs. Olivia Rodrigo at the American Music Awards, Anne Hathaway at the WeCrashed premiere, or Willow Smith at the Vanity Fair Oscars party… He’s also the man behind Beyoncé’s neon green, sequined, and feathered gown she wore to open the Oscars in 2022 and countless other names.
