With Karl Lagerfeld, fashion doesn’t just stop at the outfits on the catwalk. It’s about space design, culture, and storytelling… Now, Creative Director Virginie Viard is continuing that mission, in her own way. The Chanel Métiers d’Art 2022/23 collection that has just been performed again in Tokyo is a truly vivid and interesting example.
Chanel Métiers D’art: from Dakar to Tokyo and meaningful encounters
As the world and life change, fashion inevitably changes too. Before the show of the Chanel Métiers d’Art 2022/23 collection in Dakar, Senegal last December, Bruno Pavlovsky, President of Chanel’s Fashion Department, said: “High fashion after the pandemic is imperative. change. The way brands connect with countries around the world also needs to change. And that’s why Chanel’s presence in Dakar today is very important to us.”
It was also the first time Chanel held a fashion show in an African country, marking the beginning of a dialogue and exchange of contemporary art with traditional crafts, between the IFAN Cultural Institute by Dakar and le19M, the home of Chanel’s craftsmen. The show is also a meeting of fashion, music, and talented artists.
In June 2023, Chanel once again brought the Métiers d’Art 2022/23 collection back to Japan to continue to suggest and continue the meaningful connection, fostering old and new friendships. Chanel has brought to the capital Tokyo a cherished collection of cultural stories realized through the finest handcrafted faire savoir from the brand’s Maisons d’Art craftsmen.
Before the show started at Tokyo Big Sight, ELLE Vietnam chatted with Mr. Bruno Pavlovsky to hear him talk about Chanel’s creative movements in the world of high fashion, for today and the future. .
Mr. Bruno Pavlovsky: Up to now, Chanel is the only brand with the Métiers d’Art collection. It is a unique concept initiated by Karl Lagerfeld more than 20 years ago to honor craftsmanship. At that time, we were in the transition phase after merging the craftsmen in Paris and the craftsmen who had only recently worked on the Haute Couture collections. We wanted to find a way to showcase more of the unique craftsmanship and craftsmanship of the artisans who contribute to the creation of haute couture with the highest level of detail. Since then, Métiers d’Art has become the “signature” of Chanel, a place of sublimation creativity and superior craftsmanship. We have 11 professions, 1 training school, and more than 600 craftsmen. They all contribute to opening doors for us to connect with the world of haute couture while providing new opportunities in the future of fashion. That’s when handcrafted fair savoir techniques are preserved and developed to serve as a sustainable launchpad for the future.
Mr. Bruno Pavlovsky: After the pandemic, we understand that the way luxury brands like Chanel choose locations for shows or connect with countries around the world needs to change. You can see the change very clearly in the creative process, in the way we tell our fashion story, and also in the products that are made.
The Métiers d’Art 2022/23 collection is a perfect example of how fashionistas and creatives actively connect with the outside world, with new talents, and receive new inspiration from new fashionistas. different cultures. This collection is even more special when it is combined with music, dance, indigenous culture… All have created a concert bursting with creativity and passion. And showing this collection in Tokyo that we experience today will be just as great.
Virginie Viard has always been focused and excited about collaborating with artists in a variety of fields, sharing design inspiration, and telling fashion stories. It’s also quite a departure from Karl Lagerfeld’s previous creative process because Virginie wants to connect with more artists and she understands that will have a stronger impact. I truly believe that in today’s and tomorrow’s world, it’s important to work together because we can’t do everything by ourselves. Chanel presents 10 collections a year and constantly travels to many locations around the world. To be able to function in such a rhythm, we certainly need to work together. At the show at Tokyo Big Sight today,
