Aubameyang officially bid farewell to AFCON 2021
Gabon captain Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang is being allowed to return to Arsenal due to his inability to meet health requirements to continue his journey at the 2021 AFCON Africa Cup of Nations.
Aubameyang was found to be infected with COVID-19 on January 6, 2022 upon entering Cameroon. Two of his teammates were also confirmed positive and were isolated afterwards. Up to now, Aubameyang has missed 2 matches in the group stage of Gabon and while he is about to return to the squad to prepare for the next match, the 32-year-old striker was stopped by the medical team.
In this regard, Gabon coach Patrice Neveu said the striker will be allowed to return to Arsenal and monitor his health because the post-COVID-19 sequelae are showing signs of affecting the player’s heart.
“We can’t evaluate it here [Cameroon], we can’t assess Covid pathology here. So Mario returned to Nice and Pierre returned to Arsenal to continue watching. It was a decision we made ourselves.”
The Gabon Football Federation has decided to bring players Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang and Mario Lemina back to their clubs for them to follow up with more in-depth tests. After not seeing Aubameyang appear at AFCON 2021, some journalists slandered the striker because of his selfishness, so he was not registered to play.
However, Aubameyang himself denied the rumors with a statement on Twitter: “We have complicated issues to deal with, above all rumors, in short, I need to worry about my health. I don’t want to hear these false rumors and I hope Ghana goes as far as possible.”
As for Lemina, he also justified himself with his Instagram status: “I have nothing to lie about. I have done nothing wrong with them (journalists). I grieve for the Ghanaian media, which is surrounded by liars looking for an echo.”
